Why is My Merkury Smart Plug Not Connecting?

There may be several reasons why you can’t get your Merkury Smart Plug to connect to Wi-Fi. In this post, we’ll look at some reasons behind this and how to troubleshoot. Let’s dive in.

Merkury Smart Plug

Here are some reasons your Merkury Smart Plug isn’t connecting to Wi-Fi:

  • The plug is not in pairing mode.
  • Your router is not broadcasting on the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band.
  • Your Geeni app might be outdated.

Keep reading to learn how to troubleshoot these issues.

How to Troubleshoot a Merkury Smart Plug that Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi

Check that Your Pairing Smart Plug is in Pairing Mode

Your Merkury smart plug will only connect to the Geeni app if it is in pairing mode. If a blue light is flashing rapidly on your smart plug, the device is in pairing mode.

If you don’t see a blinking blue light, the plug is not in pairing mode. Unplug it from the power outlet and plug it back in—it should enter pairing mode automatically. But if not, press and hold the power button until the LED light blinks blue rapidly.

Next, try connecting it to Wi-Fi again to see if it works. If the problem persists, continue to the next step.

Check Your Wi-Fi Network

If you’re still unable to get your Merkury Smart Plug to connect to Wi-Fi, your Wi-Fi might be the culprit.

To troubleshoot your Wi-Fi, start by rebooting your router to refresh the connection. You can reboot your router by unplugging it from the power source, wait a few seconds and plug it back in.

If this doesn’t help, check your Wi-Fi band. Your Merkury Plug only works with the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band. If your router is operating on the 5GHz band, it might not connect. Go to your router’s admin web page and switch your Wi-Fi band to 2.4GHz. Refer to your user manual for guidelines.

More so, ensure your router is closer to the plug when setting it up. If you can’t bring your router closer, a Wi-Fi extender can help boost your Wi-Fi signal strength.

Update Your Geeni App

If your Geeni app is outdated, your Merkury smart plug might not connect to the app/Wi-Fi.

To fix this issue, you’ll need to update the app.

Follow the steps below to update your Geeni app:

  • Go to the Google Play Store or App Store on your phone.
  • Input “Geeni app” in the search bar.
  • Click on the app to go to the download page.
  • Now, tap Update to update your Geeni app.

More so, check that your smart plug’s firmware is up-to-date. You can do this via the Geeni app on your phone.

If your Merkury Smart Plug still fails to connect, continue to the next step.

Reset Your Smart Plug

Unseen glitches or incorrect settings in the plug can also cause this issue. If the problem persists after trying the fixes above, reset your plug.

Follow these steps to reboot your Merkury Smart Plug:

  • Press and hold the power button on the smart plug for 10 seconds. Then release the button.
  • The LED light will blink blue rapidly, showing it’s reset and ready to pair.

If your Merkury Smart Plug fails to connect to Wi-F after the reboot, see the next step.

Reset Your Router

Another way to troubleshoot your smart plug if it isn’t connecting is to reset your router.

If the smart plug isn’t connecting because of a problem with your router, resetting your router might eliminate the issue.

The guide below will show you how to reset your router:

  • Search for the reset button on your router. This button is often located at the back or base of the router.
  • Depending on the reset button, you may need to use a paperclip or pin to press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
  • Your router will reset to its default settings now.

If your Merkury smart plug fails to connect after the factory reset, contact Geeni support for help.

Wrapping Up

If your Merkury Smart Plug isn’t connecting, activate pairing mode on the smart plug. Then power cycle the plug. You can also try rebooting and resetting your smart plug.

If these tips fail to work, move your smart plug closer to your router.

Switching to the 2.4GHz band and updating your Geeni app may also fix the issue.

However, if your smart plug doesn’t connect after you’ve tried all the tips above, contact Geeni Support.
