How Do You Put a Schlage Lock in Programming Mode?

To make programming changes in your Schlage Lock, such as deleting/adding User Codes, you’ll need to first put the lock in programming mode. If this is what you’re looking to do but not sure how to do it, keep reading.

Schlage Lock in Programming Mode

In this post, I’ll show you how to put your Schlage Keypad Lock in programming mode and the steps to program the lock. Let’s get started.

To put your Schlage Lock in programming mode, follow the steps below:

  1. Enter your 6-digit Programming Code through the keypad.
  2. The lock will beep three times, and the Schlage button will illuminate orange.
  3. If you’ve heard three beeps and the Schlage button turns orange, your Schlage Lock is now in programming mode.

Now you can go ahead and program your lock.

As you can see, you need to enter the Programming Code for your Schlage Lock to put the lock in programming mode. If you don’t have the Programming Code, see how to find the Programming Code for your Schlage Lock.

If you’ve found the default Programming Code but it isn’t working, chances are the code was previously changed. In this case, you’ll need to perform a reset on your Schlage Lock, then use the default code to reprogram the lock. See how to reset your Schlage Keypad Lock.

That said, if you’ve successfully put your Schlage Lock in programming mode, and are looking for tips to perform some programming functions, keep reading. In the next paragraphs, I’ll show how to change the Programming Code, User Codes, enable the lock and leave feature, auto-lock, etc. Let’s dive in.

Changing the Programming Code on Your Schlage Lock

Although your Schlage Lock comes with a unique Programming Code, you want to change the code for convenience or security reasons.

So, here’s how to change your Schlage Lock Programming Code:

  • Put the lock in programming mode by entering your current Programming Code. Next, you’ll hear three beeps, and the Schlage button will light orange, indicating the lock is now in programming mode.
  • Press the Schlage button on the keypad and press key 3. The Schlage button will flash and beep three times.
  • Enter your new Programming Cod (6 digits). Wait for the lock to flash and beep three times.
  • Now, enter your new Programming Code again. The lock will beep once, and the Schlage button will illuminate green. This means the programming is successful, and your new Programming Code is now active. But if you see a red flash, the programming is unsuccessful. Repeat the steps again and follow them correctly.

From now on, you’ll have to use the new Programming Code to put your lock in programming mode.

Deleting/Adding User Codes (4 Digit Code)

A User Code is a 4-digit code that allows you to unlock your Schlage Deadbolt via the keypad. You can add and delete them as you want.

Let’s start with deleting a User Code:

  • Enter your current Programming Code to put the lock in programming mode. The lock will flash orange three times and beep three times—after entering the Programming Code.
  • Press the Schlage button and release it immediately. Then press 2 and wait for the three flashes and beeps from the lock.
  • Enter the User Code to be deleted. Wait for the usual three flashes and beeps.
  • Enter the User Code to be deleted again. Now the lock will illuminate green and beep once, showing the User Code is deleted.

To delete more User Codes, repeat the steps. Or see how to delete all User Codes at once.

And here’s how to add a new User Code:

  • Enter your current Programming Code. The Schlage button will flash three times, followed by three beeps.
  • Press the Schlage button and press the number 1 key. Then wait for the three flashes and beeps.
  • Enter a new User Code (4 digits). Then wait for the lock to flash and beep three times.
  • Re-enter the new User Code. If successful, the lock will flash a green light and beep once. So, your new User Code has been added.

Enabling/Disabling the Turn Lock Feature/Lock and Leave

Turn Lock, also called Lock and Leave, is a feature in some Schlage keypad locks (such as Schlage BE365 and BE375) that allows a user to lock the deadbolt without entering a code.

Here’s how to enable the “turn lock” feature on your Schlage Lock:

  • Enter your current Programming Cod. Then wait for the Schlage button to light orange three times and beep three beeps.
  • Press the Schlage button. Then press key 7. Turn Lock feature is now active in your Schlage Lock.

To disable it, repeat the steps above.

Enabling/Disabling Auto-Lock

This feature automatically locks your door after sometime—when you leave the lock unlocked.

Here’s how to enable auto-lock:

  • Press the Schlage button on the keypad.
  • Enter your current 6-digit Programming Code.
  • Press the number 9 key. The lock will flash green and beep once, showing the auto-lock feature is activated.

To disable auto-lock, repeat the steps below.

Note that not all Schlage keypad locks come with the auto-lock feature. If it doesn’t work for you, chances are your Schlage Lock doesn’t have the feature. You should check your user manual to confirm this.
